Service Description

Decorative painting on gilt surfaces can encompass many forms, from simple patterns to full-blown works of fine art, and can work with traditional to contemporary design. In this class, students will learn the art of architectural gilding, which includes identifying the best approach for any situation, preparing the surface and layout, applying precious metal and imitation leaves, and sealing methods. Students will then learn how to transfer a design onto the gilt surface and paint on the gilding. Students will learn about different transfer methods, the various types of paints that can be used and when to use them, how to create a repeat pattern by hand, and how to use a mahl stick. Stencils will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own. As a bonus, students can keep the stencils used in class and receive a free download of my E-book, “Murals on Canvas.” Set/Dry Time: 1-2 hours. Samples: canvas, 11x14 (two panels) Tools Materials Provided: Gold leaf, size, varnish, acrylic paint, and a pre-gilded panel ready for painting. A stencil will be provided for use in class and to keep after. Tool and Materials Needed: Preset supply list that IDAL recommends (tape, paper towels, hangers, pencils, rulers, etc.), plus artist brushes, stencil brushes, and wool pad (can be found at the hardware store). A specific list of unique items will be sent closer to the convention.
