As a decorative artist and faux finisher, I’ve always strived to push the boundaries of creativity throughout my career. Recently, I’ve embarked on an exciting new chapter that not only highlights my evolution as an artist but also as a visionary. My art residency at Bloomingdale’s and my selection as a JWJ Art Fellow has brought renewed joy to my life as a fine artist, providing me with a sustainable way to make a living—without having to climb ladders anymore.
During my residency at Bloomingdale’s, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my work in a prestigious setting. It allowed me to connect with a diverse audience and embrace a whole new level of artistic expression. This experience reignited my passion for fine art, reminding me of its profound impact and solidifying my role as a creative force in the community. My residency even led to a permanent invitation as Bloomingdale’s resident fine artist, and now art enthusiasts can view my collection daily at the Buckhead location in Atlanta, Georgia. I was nominated for the Bloomingdale’s residency by the National Black Arts Festival (NBAF).
Being honored as a James Weldon Johnson (JWJ) Art Fellow was another transformative milestone for me. This fellowship not only deepened my artistic expertise but also brought me together with like-minded creatives who share a passion for advancing the arts. It provided me with invaluable opportunities for collaboration and innovation, strengthening my dedication to a future where art plays a central role in my life. A JWJ Art Fellow is an artist selected for a prestigious residency program that honors the legacy of James Weldon Johnson. This fellowship supports established, mid-career, and emerging artists, writers, and scholars whose work reflects values like social equity, creative expression, social justice, and
community engagement. Fellows are provided with resources such as studio space, financial support, and opportunities to collaborate and engage with the community, fostering innovative and impactful creative work. I encourage others to look for residencies like this to explore your passion.
As I shifted my focus from decorative finishes to fine art, I found immense fulfillment in creating pieces that tell stories, evoke emotion, and leave lasting impressions. This new path has allowed me to step away from the physical demands of ladder work while embracing the freedom and joy of an art-centered life.
Alongside my fine art pursuits, I remain committed to empowering others through my coaching initiative, Paint to Profits. As the founder of the Decorative Painting Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, I help aspiring decorative painters and faux finishers turn their creativity into six-figure businesses. Through hands-on training, weekly Zoom coaching calls, and access to our app and a thriving design community, I provide participants with the tools they need to succeed. We also have Open Studio sessions, where participants can apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. These sessions bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that members are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of running a successful painting business.
The app I developed serves as a comprehensive resource for members of the Decorative Painting Academy, offering exclusive content, industry news, AI and systems training, and a vibrant design community. This is a space where members can Tobey Renee Sanders From Faux Finishing to Full-Time Business Coaching -My Corporate to Creative Journey:share ideas, seek advice, and collaborate on projects.
As I transition off the ladder and into my role as a full-time artist and business coach, I’m driven by a desire to make a lasting impact. Through the Paint to Profits program, I’m not only helping creative individuals build six-figure businesses but also fostering a community of support and collaboration. From my residency at Bloomingdale’s to being a JWJ Art Fellow to mentoring others, my journey is a testament to reinvention, resilience, and a passion-driven career. I feel it’s important to follow one’s heart and I thrive on inspiring others to follow theirs.
