Transform Interiors with Romabio’s Mineral-Based Paints and Plasters

By Matt Hocutt

In the world of interior design, the demand for unique, decorative and faux painting products and techniques is in high demand. One of the fastest growing design trends is decorative, interior limewashes and beautifully plastered surfaces. From walls to kitchen hoods, adding

interest with organic texture and dramatic movement of color is part of the modern rustic design movement.

For professional, decorative painters and faux finishers who have wanted easy-to-use and eco-friendly paints and plasters that can be custom tinted, Romabio has products that meet those needs while providing aesthetically pleasing authentic, Italian finishes. The demand has never been higher, and we are thrilled to be participating in the 2024 IDAL Conference with a booth and several hands-on workshops providing participants with insight into the value and artistry behind Romabio products.

Among our standout offerings that will be featured in our workshops are Velatura Mineralwash and Venetian Glaze - two products that enable artisans to craft unique, limewashed and faux plaster finishes while being eco-friendly for the applicator, the homeowner, kids, and pets. We will also showcase our authentic, slaked lime Italian plasters at the workshops.

Velatura Mineralwash: Self-Priming Limewash Elegance

Velatura Mineralwash is a mineral-based paint designed to create soft, cloud-like effects reminiscent of classic Italian frescoes. This product is perfect for professionals aiming to transform walls with a sense of historic yet timeless beauty. Its application results in a layered look that can range from subtle to dramatic, depending on the painter’s technique.

Unlike similar products in the marketplace, key advantages of Velatura Mineralwash include that it is self-priming, and custom tintable! Made from natural minerals, it’s free from harmful chemicals, making it safe for both the environment and indoor air quality. Professional painters can offer clients a sustainable, luminous and customizable option without compromising on artistic flexibility.

Venetian Glaze: Luxurious and Versatile

For those seeking a high-end, Italian plaster look without the commitment of thick plaster texture, Romabio’s Venetian Glaze offers an ideal solution. This product is known for its ability to create rich, luxurious surfaces when troweled on, that are buttery soft to the touch, reflect light beautifully, and can create dramatic movement of color. like lime plaster, adding a touch of luxury to any space.

Romabio Venetian Glaze

Venetian Glaze can be used to achieve a range of finishes, from subtle ‘limewashed’ walls to ombre effects when layering and trowel-mixing colors.

Venetian Glaze is also an eco-friendly choice, crafted with natural ingredients that ensure a low environmental impact. And unlike similar clay, and thin plaster-like products in the marketplace, key advantages of Venetian Glaze also include custom tints, no VOC or bad smell, and ability to cut in wall seams, corners, and ceiling lines with a paint brush - saving hours of time. In addition, it can be burnished from a flat finish to a satin finish, or you can use a polishing wheel with wax to achieve more sheen. Note, this is unlike acrylic products, as the lime allows manipulation of the product, one of the beauties of working with natural paints and plasters. Its versatility allows professional painters to tailor the finish to their clients’ specific tastes, whether they desire a modern, sleek look or something more traditional and ornate.

Both Velatura Mineralwash and Venetian Glaze embody Romabio’s commitment to sustainable beauty. By using these mineral-based paints, professional decorative painters can create stunning, unique finishes that are not only visually appealing but also environmentally responsible. Whether it’s the soft, ethereal look of a lime wash, or the opulent look of Italian plaster without the investment of application time. Romabio’s products offer endless possibilities for transforming interior spaces into works of art with ease and efficiency.

A stand out in the paint and plaster industry, Romabio uses authentic slaked lime sourced from the Dolomite Mountains in Italy along with other high-end minerals and ingredients to handcraft our paints, plasters and finishes. This region, renowned for its rich geological history, produces some of the highest quality limestone in the world. Romabio harnesses this natural resource, old world techniques and modern technology to create world-renowned Italian plasters, maintaining traditional craftsmanship techniques that have been perfected over centuries.

The slaked lime is meticulously processed to achieve perfect consistency and purity, ensuring that every batch meets the highest standards of quality and performance.

This commitment to authenticity and tradition not only results in stunning, durable finishes but also allows decorative painters to confidently create the highest end finishes that support premium application prices.

How to Use Velatura Mineralwash:

1. PREP Make sure the surface is clean and ready to be painted.

2. 1st COAT: Apply undiluted or add up to 5% water in a crosshatch technique to fully cover the wall. Let dry to touch before next coat.

3. 2nd COAT: Must dilute 50%-80% with water and then paint in crosshatch technique and use cloth technique if needed.

4. 2nd COAT, Extra Movement: For extra drama and movement of color you can mix your original color of Velatura Mineralwash at 80 – 90%, with 20-10% Velatura Mineralwash in Bianco White. This creates a lighter version of your original coat. Then dilute the new color 50%-80% with water. Mix well and apply in a crosshatch technique and use the cloth technique if desired.

5. TOOLS Apply with a brush for 1st Coat and brush and/or cloth for 2nd coat.

6. DRY TIME 4-6 Hours

Layering multiple coats can enhance depth and variation.

How to Use Venetian Glaze:

1. Surface Preparation: Start with a smooth, well-prepared base. Use one coat of Romabio MicroGrip Primer first. Let dry overnight. Then lightly sand and clean to create a uniform surface.

2. Application: Apply Venetian Glaze undiluted or add up to 5% water. Use a trowel or spatula in thin, even layers. Multiple layers can be added to build up the desired effect.

3. Polishing: Once dry, for additional drama, it can be burnished from a flat finish to a satin finish, or you can use a polishing wheel with wax to achieve more sheen, revealing a deep, reflective surface.

In addition to decorative interior wall finishes, Venetian Glaze has another, artistic use. When heavily diluted it becomes a durable, beautiful glaze that can color shift stone, brick or masonry, while providing an organic and highly durable finish ideal for exterior stone.
