This article features an email interview with a new international member of our IDAL community. Although he is proficient in English, the content of the article has been revised. Hosni is grateful for the opportunity to showcase his decorative painting skills to you. He is looking forward to obtaining a visa from his country to attend the convention in St. Charles and enhance his knowledge through our classes. The article includes images of his artwork.
“My name is Meziani Hosni. I live in Algeria, located in the north of Africa. Predominantly I am a self taught artist. My own studio, Nasreddine Artistic Painting, is situated in Constantine. I started painting about 20 years ago, when I was selected as the first decorative painter of the Coca-Cola company, in 2003.
After a few years, I found the Faux Effects domain. I received many issues of Faux Effects Magazine and also purchased some beautiful books by the great artist, Gary Lord.
In 2013, I opened my own studio which helped to share my art with people. Since then, I have been able to work in many residential homes and on commercial projects. Most of my work is in residential homes for middle and high class clients.
In Algeria, I find stucco (venetian gem) and travertino are the most predominant of materials, and beiges to be the predominant color. Personally, I try to create my own styles by mixing different techniques and products to show my customers the best of my art. Utilizing glazing techniques is a favorite method, and I mastered a lot of these skills from my Gary Lord books. To note, glaze is not available at stores in Algeria so I try to make my own for every project. My clients very much appreciate the final look of my glazing techniques and love that they look like wall paper.
Recently, I have also been able to do some advertising for a company called Compound Solutions and I am in the advertisements, along with my work. I use their products, especially for travertino work. I
utilize their products to create dimension, then use satin base paint and different glazes to create my faux surfaces. Social media is very important, like the US, and I use my professional page to help me get known. I use a lot of effort and attempt to master the different techniques to win the name of decorator painter (faux effects, frescos, marbling and woodgraining).
In 2017, I got the job of trainer and faux finisher of the famous Spanish company, named MONTO.
Day after day, I try to understand my customers and do the best for them because I think that the most important elements of a craftsman/client relationship is trust and honesty.
This year I am proud to be a member of IDAL. I am very thankful to join this artistic family and for allowing me to have this article and share some of my world. I hope to be able to secure a travel visa, meet and join you at the convention in November.”
